which came first, the chicken or the folk art?

Last Saturday the farmers market was pretty rainy and slow. Which is actually the best time for conversation and connection with friends and neighbors, those brave souls who come out to support us when it would be easier to stay home. I had time to chat with Diana of Scratch and Peck Feeds when she bought a t-shirt cap with a random chicken print on it. She wanted a chicken pin. I have been wanting to design a new pin for some time that uses my tiny t-shirt scraps. I have a long standing love affair with chickens in my art, so it was just the suggestion I needed to inspire me in the studio today. Here are the first hatched, I'm sure there will be more.

And indeed, I cannot upload photos anymore. We have taken really good care of our computer for the past 8 years, and well, that doesn't mean anything in the digital age. For the past year or so, as every web site upgrades to faster speeds and tastier graphics, we have slowly become unable to experience much of the shiny shiny, fast and tasty, modern internet.
So until we get that brand new computer we have been dreaming about, I am basically in a time out from really using the computer or you know,  "engaging in an online community." But I am still sorting and cutting and sewing every week, making remarkable recycled goods for you and your family. I am hauling my wares up and down the steps of my studio in downtown bellingham and setting up a cute little booth every saturday at the farmers market. And despite my absence from twitter or blogger or pinterest or etsy or even facebook, people keep finding me and trying on hats and petting cashmere whales and buying my crafts in real life. And right now, that is enough. And I thank you. And I plan to be back online and better than ever in the near future.

crafty wonderland this saturday!

bright grey skies and blazing dandelions

All winter I didn't buy any new used fabric. I got creative with tinier and tinier scraps and did some limited edition items to use up some of my mountainous stash. Mostly it was invigorating to go through piles and unearth forgotten treasures, but my t-shirt bin was looking like the dingy pile of blue and blah that it had become. Then last week, maybe it was the hint of blossoms on the breeze or the way the dandelion's yellow will blaze against a stormy bright grey sky or some thrift intuition, I took the family to Goodwill and found exactly the colors I have been craving. It can be extra challenging to work with recycled materials when you have a color range in mind, so I was delighted to find dark greys and crisp browns to pair with acid greens and lilacs and yellows and turquoise. A celebration of northwest spring: mud and tulips and hope.

All of this is,of coarse, in preparation for the opening day of Farmer's Market this Saturday! This is the Market's 20th season(and moth and squirrel's 6th!)so there will be lots of extra celebrating from an opening day antique tractor parade to monthly 20% off days with cooking, crafts and kids days in between. As always I am excited to reunite with awesome customers, inspiring vendors, fresh produce and delicious snacks in my face.
I will be in the pavilion every Saturday from 10am-3pm to sell you hats and stuffed animals and to talk about the weather and what's growing in your garden and how franklin is doing and what to do with that sweater your boyfriend accidentally shrunk.
